what's kbb on a 2003 aero?
you are probably the best judge of value of the car because you've met the current owner, presumably seen records, history, condition, etc... unless it's a way below market value sort of a deal that is an obvious no lose situation (ie someone else is certain to buy it later that day), I'd try to make my offer contingent on inspection at my indy (since we'd need to do that after the fact anyway here to get it registered)... I don't think anyone online could safely speculate on the odds of failure without seeing the car... that it's run well for 30k is good, and the turbo is the robust one... your indy's opinion is money well spent!
fwiw, a 9-5 with a dead engine would typically sell for $1-2k (or get parted out). Lots of them in the local classifieds... so you can calculate the most you can lose... if you're around $3-4k cheaper than the going rate for a newer less sludge prone 9-5 (04+), then even in the worst case, you can drop in an engine without undue economic impact (vs buying a newer one in the first place)...
that's the way I look at it anyway...
