Two grand is NOT a joke... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 05:58:43 In Reply to: Anybody DIYed a Driver's Door?, Boomer, Mon, 14 Mar 2011 15:59:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just had this done in January. Door skin pushed in, lock & latch mechanism damaged. Insurance (comp) estimate well over $2,000.
You may well be able to get a door from a yard for a couple hundred bucks. Heck, I know a place in PA where I could get them for well under a hundred. But unless you get one the exact color, you've gotta paint it, and THAT is where the big bucks are. The estimate I received went into painting not only the door, but the fender and rear door to blend the color in. Painting is a labor intensive process, unless you want a cheapo job with tons of overspray. And auto paint these days is not cheap. Figure $400 or more (probably more...) for enough quality paint to spray a door and blend the side. You can't get this stuff on sale at Home Depot...
When I got my car back (Imola Red 2000 SE Sedan), not only was the outside a perfect match, but they sprayed the inside of the door as well. Anyplace you would see the painted metal of the door on the inside is the same color as the outside. The only way one would know it's not the original door is the build sticker is missing. And absolutely NO overspray.
I think the final bill came to less than $2,000. The shop may not have felt it necessary to blend the paint in, as the paint on my car was in very good shape, with little or no fade at all (PO kept it garaged). Whatever. I paid my $200 deductible and went on my way...
