old fashioned type, but I sucked and blew in it while it was held horizontal and it seemed to allow air flow one way and block it the other way.

Autozone did have a brake booster check valve - but beside being $ 7 it looked like it was made to plug into a brake booster grommet as one end was maybe 1" in diameter . As in turns out I probably could have used it as I had a formed hose with a large end from when I replaced the old PCV hoses with kit # 6 on my 1999 Saab.

I bet the oem check valve alone could be sourced with some more investigation, it is poor design to have the thing mounted on the valve cover with all the heat transfered there.

The thing that tipped me off that the valve had cracked inside the hose was that the car was down almost a quart of oil - and like my 1999 it does not use oil, so I checked the hoses and found the valve stem had cracked inside of that shrink hose.
