Ok that's a good lead. The very, very few times I have seen an 01 and older transmission go bad, they have been that way. Something inside lets go (maybe a planetary gear) and the transmission have two gears engaged at the same time.
You can barely get it to move by flooring the throttle but the car is moving with a screeching from the clutches working against each other.

Another owner that used to be regular here had the same thing happen on his 99 V6 and I replaced his transmission with a used one.
