It's been a couple of stories where a person has charged the battery and bought another as a spare to drive the car some 100 or more miles to get it to a shop he trusted instead of having an unknown shop change the alternator.
If the alternator is dead, it is fully possible to drive the car with a newly charged battery until the battery is depleted and the engine dies again.
You just have to know what you are doing and act by that.
It has also become more important lately to check (and replace) the battery cable from alternator to battery to see that it is not burned by the alternator lug bolt. That will kill a new alternator slowly.
