LEDs are superior if properly designed. Your stop light lens/reflector are designed for a near point source (bulb filament) and will not redistribute the LED light properly. This is the same reson why a drop-in HID replacement for H7 does not work (many people on this board tried just to revert back to regular bulbs).
About the lifetime comment - yes, some high-brigtness LEDs are rated up to 10,000 hours. However, lifetime is always in a tradeoff with brightness and proper heat sinking. Given the "no-brand" nature of the bulbs I bet the lifetime will be less than a regular bulb. I tried a number of LED replacement "instrument" bulbs and more than half of them burned out within a few months.
The resistor needs to be put in in parallel, non in series. To emulate the real bulb you need a 7.2 Ohm / 20 Watt resistor - although the computer may be satisfied will less power (depends on the computer).
Also, the stop/tail lights that "are much brighter than stock" is nothing to brag about (unless you have a ricer mentality). The lights should be as close to the stock bulbs as possible - unless your goal is to irritate a driver behind you.
Given how easy it is to replace the stop/tail bulbs and how cheap they are (especially if bought online) I see absolutely no reason to waste time/money experimenting with LEDs.
LEDs around the house are not that much more efficient that CFLs at aproximately 100X the cost (CFLs are $0.5 each after subsidy, LEDs are $50 for comparable output). LEDs have questinable lifetime. They will not burn out but will gradually become dimmer - which is very hard to detect without special tools. The only advantage they are easily dimmable.
