Went to the dealer that had serviced the car previously and had recommended work and the vehicle and talked to the mechanic who performed the inspection recommending work on the car. He's been a Saab mechanic for at least ten years and has worked on many of my Saabs (I've had 14 or 15). He had recommended a new transmission based on the dashboard light and a code he pulled which he wrote down as 1783 (ticket was six months ago so he's not sure about the code when he looked the code up). Checking on his Saab computer, Saab has no such code (1783) that he could find for that year so he thinks it might have been a 1743 and he wrote the code down wrong.
1743 is a code for transmission mechanical failure. However, 1783 is a generic code for "transmission overheated" and according to the Ford dealer who has the car for sale, the previous owner traded for a Jeep to tow his barbecue pit. I checked with my indie whose specialty is transmission repair and he thinks maybe the guy was towing his barbecue pit with the 9-5 Aero and over heated the tranny which could produce a code 1783 if Saab does in fact have such a code for that year.
But the odd thing is the transmission seemed to be working fine when I drove the car. If it was an overheat, I doubt it was overheated for long.
But it looks like the only solution is a tranny replacement unless you think it could be something else.
