Broken Front Brake Caliper Spring - My Experience

Just a reminder to CHECK your brake caliper springs each time you have the wheels off. As posted separately, I just finished renewing most suspension wear components on our 1999 9-5 SE 2.3lpt (170K mi). While working on that, I noticed a broken spring clip on the right front brake caliper. I took it to Andrews in Princeton, MN for a 4-wheel alignment last week, so I had them put on a new spring clip. On the drive to Princeton the brakes seemed fine, but on the drive home I noticed the pedal felt not really soft, but 'different' and long in travel, and in stop & go the second application of brakes was definitely less soft. It was a subtle difference, and since the Tech hadn't spent any extra time on the brakes themselves, I figured something must be related.
A quick search of the board here and a comment from SWEDECAR on a question about a broken rear spring clip made me decide to check pads for wear. Sure enough, the pads on that wheel were nicely worn into matching wedges. The short side of each as just about at replacement limit anyway, so today I put on new front pads. The broken spring was nearly in the correct position, so I had to look closely to see it wasn't intact. It may have been broken for quite a while - so give yours a check when you are doing other work. With new pads on all corners, the brakes are right again - all of this without bleeding, which will happen in late summer.
My thanks to SWEDECAR and other posters on this!
