Do not get anything fancy in terms of code explanations. With the Saab, many of the codes do not make sense outside the WIS. Best thing to do is to search for the code on this forum, and you will find the explanation and how others have dealt with the problem. In many cases, one needs to have a different perspective. If a sensor reports a problem, do not assume that the sensor is the problem, it can easily be a symptom of a problem, not the cause. Worn or fouled plugs are a good example. Heavy misfiring and the O2 sensors report problems. With 'running problems', first thing to do is to pull the plugs, read the deposits and not cylinder to cylinder variations. It is a good idea to use a good fuel system cleaner to ensure that the injectors are clean, also reduces valve and combustion chamber deposits. Hard starting in the fall with cool nights is typically 'cured' in a couple of days with Techron Concentrate. This is an example of where you will not have any codes to direct you. You can get codes for lean/rich with or without misfiring from problems with vacuum hoses, or BPC<-->Turbo hoses. We have seen auto techs replace good sensors because they are are incompetent or dishonest.
The most common codes are for DIC/IDM partial failures. All DIC/IDM units fail, not a matter of if. If you want to be prepared, keep a new unit in the vehicle. If the unit goes bad on a weekend far from home, you are not going to get any help. [If you are near Denver, there is a dealer there who used to replace these for $600 or more.] Having the code reader with you when a DI fails out in the middle of nowhere is not very satisfying if you do not have a spare unit. If you do have a spare DI that you have carried for years, then you feel quite good and your wife might not think that you were crazy after all.
