the relative increase in price you pay over regular and mid-grade declines, percentage-wise, as the difference between the grades tends to stay pretty stable, at least in my experience.
I have an '01 9-5 Aero, and I always use Sunoco Ultra. I get 22-25mpg in city/expressway mixed and 33-36mpg on the interstate, max speed always 65 mph on the cruise control.
You will find that while switching to a lower grade fuel won't harm your Aero in any way (the computer adjusts accordingly), the way the car feels when you accelerate in noticeably different. The premium fuel gives you better performance, and slightly better gas mileage (I'd estimate 10% or so) over lower grades of fuel.
Personally, I'd never put 87 octane fuel in my Aero; the performance/price tradeoff is pretty small, and not worth it to me. I'm far from being any kind of aggressive driver, but I do enjoy the Aero's power when merging onto high speed roads or in emergencies. The other 9-5 in our family is a 9-5 Arc wagon, and even in Sport mode, it's no match for the Aero.
Gotta have SOME fun...!
