Folks,
I have been using synthetic lubes for 26 years.
All the way from my cheap Volkswagen days to the High dollar cars I maintain today.
Along the way I have experienced and learned a litte.
The basic engine metals and synthetic oil have not changed drasticly in the last 20 years but Saab is sceptical and warns aginst the use of synthetics for almost two decades and then has a change of heart. Could it be the mechanical stress demands of the motor and transmissions require super lubricants? Whats changed to cause Saab to change their minds? The engine seals? I doubt it as the same rear engine seal that was in the 81 900 fits all Saab 4 cyl motors.
Today and for several years now ...If you buy a air compressor or a pressure washer, they all come loaded with their factory installed synthetic lubricant and if you use any other type of oil , it will void the warranty. ... It make you wonder what the hell goes on here. I have worked on the same cars deep into the 200,000 mile range and never have experienced a blown engine or timing chain. On replacing the valve cover gasket, on visual inspection I cant tell the difference between one that has 60,000 miles verses 260,000 miles if it used Mobil 1. On 5 speed transmissions ...You wouldnt beleive it. I use Amsoil 20/50 series 2000 race motor oil. 36,000= miles later I change it and go to replace the filter and it looks as clean as the new one I fixing to install and no metel on the magnet "NONE" Needless to say ...I take the new filter off the bill and put it back into the bin. The numbers are not in yet but I will say they are high. No failures on a gearbox That I hand built or factory rebuilt and installed with Amsoil series 2000. Keep in mind ...I have been doing this for along time.

On the Oil filter ..... The oil filter never filters all the oil that goes to the bearings. It has a releif valve and when the filter medium wont flow what the oil pump is pushing at it .. The releif valve pops open and unfiltered oil goes straight to the moving parts, even with a New oil filter. As the filter ages the filter medium becomes more restrictive and the releif valve pops open sooner as you speed the motor up. You and I dont know this is ever happening. My conclusions are the filter needs to be 4 times the size it is now. This will bring on another hand full of problems ... a perfect motor with 300,000 miles plus and everything around it falling apart!

Back in the early 1940 GM cars only had a screen for a oil filter. GM did no other changes to the motor other than install a filter and increased engine life over 40%

I just read a post where people are having problems with dealer service.
1. Good Dedicated professional Automotive Technical people are few and far between. The Dealers dont pay worth a dam, so they dont see many of them.
2. In general .... Brilliant people are not fixing cars.
3. Big Sloppy Dealership syndrom. Make more small dealers who service what they sell and let them compete aginst each other for the sales and service. AND recall every Saab on the road and take off that cheap corporate emblem and replace it with quality.
"Uncle Bob ... Cant you take The top dog out for lunch and grab him by the ears and guide his eyes in tne direction of the light?"

These problems are not Typical and unique to Saab Either
Conclusion: When You buy a new car ..... Check with and talk to the people that will be doing the follow up service and warranty work. Ask questions ...like how much for Major service, inbetween services, what motor is best. what do you guys use for antifreeze "grin". Pay close attention to who they are and their values. Use your God given 6th sence and follow it.
