before he goes to school. That's what we did with the '95 CS. Did the stuff it needed, like plugs, filters, serp belt, radiator, then sent her off in it. When she'd come home I'do things that were becoming issues, like hoses, a tranny mount, a fan controller, an ACC, couple of switches, brakes. Took her all the way through school. Only semi-stranded her once, and that was just a gas tank strap that broke and was dragging, so we had it towed and she had it fixed locally.
It was nice to have a "big" car so she could get back and forth each summer and fall with all her stuff. And in the Saab I knew it'd be good in winter. A Japanese whatever is fine, but you can still have stuff fail. There are no guarantees on stuff.
Our other daughter has a '99 9-3. They are pretty reliable. Her's has 160K and works fine. Just get one with some known history.
