Sorry to hear about your leak. I did this job recently, and I agree that it's not very fun!
Addressing your question about sealants: they might work okay, but I would go with something more like the Hylomar HPF. The best seal will be an o-ring the right size, well-lubricated (HPF), with very clean joint (remove all corrosion for sure). You are counting on the elasticity of the o-ring (hopefully Viton) to be compressed, not harden, and keep a pressure seal. Sealants that swell the o-ring are bad, because the o-ring will eventually shrink back and leak. Sealants that don't stick well to the surfaces that they seal have an issue too - and that surface might be the o-ring.
All that said, I get nervous every time I do a job where the o-ring makes a critical seal. Get your joint really clean, lube with the HPF (or perhaps silicone grease), and do be certain you have a proper fit. If there was much corrosion removed, that might mean a very slightly oversize o-ring - in which case make the effort to be sure you have fluoroelastomer o-ring(Viton is a tradename for one), and don't go so large that it buckles.
Good luck - don't give up!
