I sold tires for Sears (the largest tire retailer in the world) in 1976 and it was the same back then, good tires to the rear.
Low traction situations, blow out, hydroplaning, whatever, are always easier to manage with the more traction at the rear. Losing rear traction, blowout or hydroplaning, tends to make a car oversteer or even swap ends, particularly as you try and slow down to cope with the situation. Front loss of traction causes understeer or reduced steering control, but the back end with the good traction stays behind the front and the car is still manageable. FWD or RWD same story.
