In reliability circles, mechanical devices are said to suffer/experience “old age” mortality. That being said, any device, mechanical or electrical, can suffer failures at any time no matter what the statistics of that happening are. A good example is when someone buys a NEW car and it turns out to be a “lemon.”
Components of a car that is a certain age will degrade over time just due to exposure to oxygen and lubricants. (e.g. tires over 6 years since manufacture are seen to be more prone to suffer from dry rot and failure and are recommended for replacement.)
What is probably most critical is not the mileage, but how well the car was maintained and how it was driven. Was the oil changed on a regular schedule? If a SAAB 4-cyl, was the PVC fix applied to the engine? Was it mostly used for short trips that favored the formation of sludge? Did the driver use it only a little, but treat it like a hot rod? There are a lot of questions you need to answer no matter if it is a Saab or a BMW. Do a lot of research on the year and model of whatever car you want to buy. It will hopefully help, but nothing is really guaranteed unless the dealer is selling with an extended warranty that will cover some of the repairs in the future.
There is a FAQ titled, ”Buying a Used Saab” in the FAQ section of this board. It should be your next stop.
