Lock was not popping up on wife's '04
drs_install [key word]
WIS is mostly useless. I could not find the critical details below posted before.
Work from the right hand seat.
Remove the trim around the lock, which also contains the key verification antenna. Turn clockwise around 20 degrees and lift off. Remove the electrical connector and inspect the cavity between the top rubber trim and a plastic ledge below. See any dirt or grit there? Easy method is to blow clean with shop air. If you do not do this or look first with a flash light and do not need to, there is no reason to remove the connector. Pull the parking brake up slightly if needed and move things over there.
If you look down at the die cast metal housing that the cylinder is in, you will see a square hold down around 2 inches at position 4:30. You need to push a piece of bent metal in there to swing a locking pawl inwards to allow the cylinder to be removed. The pawl swings on a vertical pin at its left end. The opening to access this is close to the pivot and pushing on the pivot will do nothing. You need to push to the right of that. This is tricky. I used a 3/32" hex key. But note that such might not be long enough.
The pawl is blocked unless the key is in the off position, which is with the key blade parallel to the axis of the vehicle. Note markings in the trim/antenna.
When you get the pawl depressed, remove the cylinder by pulling up on the key.
If you turn on the ignition and the antenna cannot read the key, SID will provide a nasty message and the anti-theft alarm will sound, your are disabled. Only recourse is to put the antenna over the lock and insert the key and power up the vehicle.
The cylinder was very dry, no grease etc. Soaked in paint thinner [varsol]
and got a lot of crude out of the lock. Use key to move things around and repeat etc. Then I blotted dry and put in an ultrasonic cleaner with floor cleaner and warm water. More junk. Water rinse, water in ultrasonic cleaner a few times, blew water out with a small long nozzle and shop air. Removed nylon spring retainer, spring and washer. Lubed with 10-W-40 motor oil between the cylinders, not into the key cavity. Worked that around. Then applied a small amount of moly grease to the pawl, lower cylinder gap and cam-pin surfaces and worked in, wiped off any excess. Assemble the washer, spring and spring retainer, install in vehicle. Note how the pawl is oriented to the hole etc, for future reference.
Repeated with the '03 with the old style lock. It was not dry assembled and was lubed with a clear amber grease. When I cleaned it, there was very little dirt and wear mess, perhaps because of the lube.
