As I understand it, the combustion by-products leak by the rings and end up in the crankcase area. If not vented from the crankcase (negative pressure) the highly acidic combustion gases cool and condense into the oil in the sump and cause the oil to break down and coagulate. Negative pressure means the gases are being sucked back into the intake and burned in the next combustion cycle.
