Companion Flange???

Had an indy look today at what I thought was a wheel bearing issue. He said the bearing was Ok but he ID'd a noise with a stethoscope that was coming from what looks on the eEuro site like a "companion flange". He pointed it out to me and at the time called it a bearing ...???
The noise (for about a 1000 miles) was previously classic bearing noise, ie turns back and forth made it fluctuate. Speed proportional. A low moan, etc etc.
Then this week it "graduated" suddenly. I thought it was a change in the nature of the wheel bearing which I had noticed previously.
Now, it seems to be at most speeds, best heard on smooth roads and disappears whenever I have the brakes applied. Returns when brakes are released. Is a slightly higher pitch than the previous 'bearing' issue.
Brakes have been checked and are fine.
Anyway , has anyone any experience with this animal? I have never heard of it. Never seen anyone on here with a mention of trouble with it. Car has 175,000mls. Its a 2000 wagon lpt.
Ideas welcomed. Thanks in advance.
