Tread depth is the biggie, especially with Blizzaks. The first few/32nds of tread on those is the really 'juicy' ice-gripping compound. Any more than that, and they're okay snow tires. You'll want to look on Bridgestone's site (or whichever manufacturer) for original tread depth.
Then, go pick up an inexpensive tread depth gauge at an auto parts store. That'll tell you how much tread's left, and you can then decide if those used tires are worth it.
Also, inspect the tread and sidewalls carefully, and check the date code on the sidewall. Tires more than two or three years old get to be suspect. As for the tread (especially if they've been on a 9-5 and not rotated), look for uneven wear/cupping, and also look at the condition of the sidewalls. Cracks=bad.
My own Blizzak experiences are mixed. Great while in the 'juicy' tread zone, okay otherwise. Scary on wet pavement, don't last long enough for my needs (basically a season and a half/10k miles, max).
I'm in the same boat, shopping for some used snows, as two of my Green Diamonds are showing cracks on the sidewalls. :-\
