A bad mass airflow sensor did in cylinder #4 at high altitude. Burned some valves and subsequently ruined the piston.
My great Indy, Walter Wong at Right Solution in LA suggested an 80,000 mile engine he had in a customers car with a bad auto trans. He had all the records and the care seemed very well maintained. I was reluctant because I had always felt uneasy with the low friction pistons and felt the rings and pistons were weak in comparison to other Saab 4 cylinder turbos.
Walter and I talked it over a bit and we came up with a plan where he would pull the engine, take off accessories and give me the head and short block. I toke the pieces to my machinist Martin Davidson in the San Fernando Valley.
The crank was fine, #4 bore was bad, and I needed exhaust valves and valve guides.
I ordered Wossner pistons and waited 3 weeks for them. in the meantime I ordered all new bearings, rod and crank, and small end bearings for the rods.
I had drive an Aero with a lightened crank at Walters and I loved it. So I went a different route and ordered a Spec aluminum flywheel from Genuine saab. A new Aero clutch disk and plate as well.
The shop balanced everything including the crank, flywheel, and even the pressure plate. They reassembled the short block with the new Wossner forged pistons and new rings. JE is also a good piston.
They cleaned up the black and machined the deck as well.
