Granted, if you looked inside my garages, you'd quickly surmise that I can find value in just about any piece of scrap, but since the software upgrade around 2003-2004, it seems like it would sit there forever.
Prior to that software change, sudden failure of DIC's happened far too frequently. My first SAAB (2002 Aero SW) went dead on the road with that.
Now, they seem to always give warning.
So you get a CEL, determine bad DIC, order a new one, replace.
I suppose if it took a long time to get replacement, the one could get worse than the one you previously replaced, but...
This past summer I replaced the DIC on son's 2005. Intermittent CEL's which I first tried to fix with new plugs. Finally bought eBay NEW DIC, turned out to be piece of knock-off crap. Ordered from eEuroparts, good to go.
All said, he had the original bad one in the car for months without any symptoms, other than intermittent CEL. The knock-off started good for a week, then CEL's and missing at higher rpm's.
My limited experience is once CEL, you have plenty of time for new one, no need to install another bad one.
