I recently helped a friend who felt the need to tear apart a working engine because someone told him it would be a good idea. I felt the only problem with the 2000 2.3 was a blown turbo. I was right but the drive to replace with new pushed him to change out all bearings, gaskets, balance shaft chain and guides along with timing chain and guides. Everything was installed as I have always done this (many, many times), and torqued to specs. The engine was reinstalled by a shop and was told by the owner/friend that the engine was smooth and sounded great. Two weeks later, after 500 miles and an oil change, he claims he began to hear a rattling in the engine. Eliminating all other moving parts (pulleys, etc.) the engine still makes the noise. Listening as best I can the sound it coming from the timing side of the engine, sounding eerily as if the chain is smacking on the valve cover. Removing the cover shows no sign of said smacking and everything feels tight and in place. I can't think of what the noise might be as it doesn't seem to change with RPMs either. Any suggestions would help before I dive back into this thing. I hate these sorts of things as I have been fairly removed from the car since helping with the initial parts install. Who knows what could have happened in the mean time, but I appreciate your thoughts.
