I saw the same show and had similar questions.
Most of the basic readers range from $35 - $70. Brands include Equus and Actron and are found from sellers on Amazon. You can get them from tool suppliers like Snap-On too.
If you want more functionality and have a laptop there's Autoenginuity for around $200. There's also something that's been posted on this board called Op-Con. Look it up on eBay - it's around $30. It's from the UK and runs on a laptop. It's designed for Vauxhall but will work on Saab too as they're both GM based. It does much more than a typical reader.
