Rear wheel alignment question...special tool needed?

I just replaced the trailing arm bushings on my '04 ARC (at 122,000+ miles the originals were totally shot). I went with new poly bushings and now need to get an alignment done.
The only local alignment shop has a nice new Hunter alignment machine, but no experience with Saab 9-5's. I talked with the tech who performs the alignments and he looked up the 9-5 on the Hunter computer. It describes using a special tool to hold the trailing arms during the alignment. The tech kind of scratched his head when he saw this...WIS also mentions this tool.
My question is> Is this tool really necessary? Can an alignment be done without it? Can any one give me a description on how to align the rear end without this tool, that I can pass onto my local alignment shop?
Thanks!
