there are various aspects to this depending on how deep you want to go... but in my case, I did all 4 shocks, put on new rear springs (not necessary, but made some sense in my case), rear spacers + I'll need new tires. I got konis + will buy nice tires, but I only paid labour for an alignment. I probably should have also done the bushings as saabsince93b will point out (but at the time didn't feel I could diy it + my indy didn't feel it was necessary - that doesn't mean it might not be worth doing for some though)... All in, it will be closing in on $2k I figure, but you could do it way cheaper (cheaper rear shocks only, spacers, and catch it before the tires get eaten, which can happen fast... for me <5000 miles of highway between undetected wear + a shredded flat!)... if you want konis, watch out for sales - I've seen them discounted twice now by 20% in spring... but I bought them in the fall and paid full price!
anyway, the 9-5 is a fantastic car... rides nicely, fast, safe, great on the highway... I suppose the same could be said re the 9000 ;-)... I wouldn't hesitate to buy another 9-5... just look over the cars out there carefully... you'll know when you find a good one!
