On every case Im aware of, a replacement turbo solved the smoke issue on initial start up. I have looked real close at the PCV system and havent seen any tell tale signs of satuation or the system being over run by excesive crank case pressure or oil.
I do have 1 99 9-5 "55,000 miles" that I maintain that had a very bad hose that runs from the pcv nipple in the valve cover via the oil trap. The hose was limp and gummy and split right down the side. "customer was complaining of burning smell" Thanks for the insight on the PCV Goran. The hose looked like a material problem .... I will be keeping an eye on it. If that new hose sponges, it will point right at a problem.
Ed in NC .... The PCV check out and the switch to Mobil1 10/30 was high on my priority list to help resolve the problem. PCV looked perfect. Any change at all on the smoke?
Im not sure whats happening here with this issue other than knowing the turbo replacement solved the problem on the other 99 9-5's that I maintain. The way I feel about it is if its the nature of the beast and it dont cause excesive oil consumption, Contamination of the catalitic converter, deposit build up on the spark plugs AND adds 100K to the service life of the turbo = Great.
My experience with turbo failure on saab is:
In early stages of failure, a cloud of heavy white smoke out the tail pipe on initial start up.
In moderate stage of failure smoke out the tail pipe at times on accelerating after setting still like at a red light or a extended idle period.
Massive failure will blind the car behind you.
On every case it was the turbo seal failed on the exhaust side of the turbo. The proof was there was no spark plug fouling or contamination.
Other notes are:
Goran, Low tension rings and dark oil ... Thanks again as I was never able to exactly figure what was causing it. BTW 9000 94 up - does it too. You reccon Saab is going for the half million mile mark on cylinder bore wear? At 300,000 + miles on the 2.0L the bore condition looks excellent as the final fit cross hatch is still visible at the top of the cylinder. Never had a call to get a piston out of the way so I could get my dial indicator that rides on a small sled down to the area of the bore that never gets touched by the piston, so I could take quadrant readings to give me a graphics on taper and out of round. I use to say the 2.0L will go 300K ... I might be wrong as it may go 500K before wear out. AND just maybe the 9-5 will go a million. Time will tell.
What is important here is that owner get a documented statement of complaint on the smoke issue so you can prove that the problem existed while the 9-5 was under warranty. It may require a call to Saab Customer Relations in Alanta. The number should be in your owners manual. When you do this, GET a case# and dont loose it so the next time you communicate ... the past is not lost in space.
I would appreciate knowing the out come and will keep you all informed with what I learn.
