I thought southern cars didn't tend to rust much?
I live in the salt belt. The only good way I know of to prevent rust is to oil spray. If all you care about is that little area, you could just get a can of rust check + spray in there once a year. It will creep in... but that place is just cosmetic. I'd get the whole car done if you live in a place where cars rust. I've got a couple c900's in not bad shape considering age + the amount of salt they've seen. Downside to oil spray is rubber parts may soften/expand + look funny/not seal as well etc. Main one I've noticed is the fender mounted turn light gaskets... but those are cheap to replace + it takes years before they look bad...
