OK, so here is how it fared....by the way it is a road bike on a Thule fork-mount "Peloton" unit with Thule fairing and Saab bars)
I got out of it pretty well really.
Car was fine. Rails stayed solid and in fact unmarked after some Armor-all.
Bike suffered only in the area of handlebars (very slight bend) and shifter levers (not too expensive) and seems ok in fork etc. All usable.
The fairing and fork-mount carrier were totally OK.
The Bars were what broke - FORTUNATELY saving all the other components by the early release at the driver side end of the front bar of course.
It is a good signal to not tighten your bars TOO tight so that in the unlikely event of an incident there is something to give and thus save the bike.
I got the same new bars and mount set (at the Brown dealership in San Diego here) and I think that the 149 with an online coupon for 10% off made it a better deal than when I first got them 5 years ago.
