Not a lot of good news here. A MacGyver solution might be alright in a non-critical spot on the car, but a failure of a half-baked repair of the oil pump cover is likely to be catastrophic, occur at the most inconvenient time and at the worst possible location. There is not much clearance between the oil pump cover and the haromonic balancer, so any sort of attachment scheme you came up with couldn't stick out more than current pieces.
A replacement cover is the only acceptable solution. A used cover is probably OK if it comes from an engine that didn't suffer a sludge failure and does'nt have excessive mileage.
A further complication is that the engine has to come out of the car to replace the cover. Some people have replaced it the car, but I was unable to get some of the cover bolts out, even though I had lifted the engine and pushed it to the left side of the car as was recommended. This was when I was replacing the balance shaft and timing chains.
