Just bought Aero - lost 3rd gear on the way home

Last night I purchased a 2001 saab aero, 5 speed wagon. KBB value on this car is around $3000, and I paid $1200, so I can't really complain about anything that goes wrong with it... it had been sitting and hadn't been driven for about a year, but the seller claimed that it had no significant problems when he stopped driving it last year (he bought another car).
When I was driving it home, I was having trouble downshifting, especially from higher gears. There were several points at which I could not downshift at all from 5th gear, and I had to pull over to the side of the road, come to a complete stop, and start over in 1st gear.
After about 25 miles, I lost 3rd gear completely. What should have been 3rd gear was acting like 5th gear (50 MPH at 1500 RPMs in "3rd"). Yes, I am sure that I was in 3rd and not in 5th.
I am not mechanically inclined, and this is the first saab that I have owned. I am going to take it to a mechanic on Friday, but was wondering if anyone had any clues as to what might be going on, and what repairs might be necessary.
Thanks!
