A key question...

So after numerous sloggings through all the messages on this board about programming keys, and after discussing it with the closest dealer (about 50 mins away) I finally purchased a used all-in-one key and decided to make the trip, car title in hand, to have the FOB programmed to the car and order a new key (that I would then have shipped to my house and install it in the programmed FOB). Oddly, when I showed up at the dealership I was point blank told a used Key could not be programmed to the car, no way, no how. I asked them to try and they refused, insisting it was a total waste of time. Now, I'm not the brightest guy on the block but really, did I miss something here? Should I not be able to program a used FOB so that it functions with my car? I know I'd need at least one key that works present for the process and if I had more than the one working key (which I don't) and didn't have extras present for the process they would then be dead keys, etc...
Anyway, I would love to have a definitive yea or nay as driving another 2 hours for nothing does not excite me in the least. Thanks for your help.
Dan
