Get a digital VOM. Ammeters read current flowing in a circuit (have low resistance and hence are easy to overload), voltmeters measure voltage in series (have high resistance, not so easy to overload).
I've not tried the clamp type method, we use them for high current loads (diesel generators), but for residual current flow, you may need to disconnect the battery and place meter in circuit (with everything turned off, lights, etc).
