The linkage is pretty stout. I had a problem of no shift once in my 2001 Aero and I found a piece of wood jammed in the likage at the transmission end. I think some kind of rodent brought it in there because it was huge!! I just pulled it out with long needle nose pliers and that was it.....now I know this is a crazy incident, but it did happen to me.
John's advice is great. If the swivel ball joint is at fault, genuinesaab has an improved one with shift shaft for $150 that is great....better than OEM.
The bottom of the shaft has a welded on tube with bushings in place for the shifter shaft that goes forward to the trans. Check that too.
