R134a was the low ozone depletion replacement for R12. R12 refrigerant is a CFC gas and was previously the most common (only?) gas used in automotive air conditioning systems.
R22 is an HCFC gas and was commonly used in freezer systems and home A/C systems where it operates at higher pressures than R12. Therefore you should not be able to substitute R22 for R134a. R22 may have greater BTU/lb heat transfer capacity but only by operating at elevated pressures.
I have never heard of R22a.
