I agree with you about the 5-speed. It's not that good. I have a Viggen and I've already had the transmission worked on (there was a technical service bulletin for certain problems) and it's still just OK. Not as bad as the 5-sp tranny in an 87 Jeep Comanche, but it's not very fast shifting or precise. Supposedly the auto is made by the same dealer who supplies Lexus with transmissions. It's supposed to be very nice, if you like autos. My next car might have an auto because, while manuals are great on twisty back roads, manuals suck in traffic (which I experience every day driving to/from work).
