When a DI cassette finally fails, the car will not move under its own power. I had one go on a 1991 9000 turbo, and it was like flipping a switch. Car running - car not running.
As others say, though, a CEL can mean MANY things. I have an intermittent CEL on my 2000 SE, and it flips back and forth between P0455 and P0420. Sometimes, it will clear itself, other times, I go in with my Craftsman scanner and clear it. My mechanic tells me the P0455 is the EVAP valve in the filler pipe, and isn't cheap to fix. Not sure what the P0420 is caused by, but as long as the light isn't on at inspection time, I'm fine with it...
