The exhaust has to come down/off (I dropped the whole thing--downpipe through muffler so I didn't have to deal with rusted bolts at the flexpipe). Directions vary slightly as to year and transmission, too ('00-01 5-speed cars have the pan and a knock-out cast over where the bolt at the flywheel end go).
You want a new oil pick-up O-ring for reassembly, and use anerobic gasket sealer (manual says 2mm bead of sealant on the pan) for sealing the pan back to the block (no physical gasket, per se). Torque spec for the bolts is 16 lb/ft, per WIS.
Search the archives for more complete descriptions of the job and/or find a copy of the WIS (service manual disc) to review. It's not a quick job, but IS satisfying to complete.
