How can you say it cannot be the ignition switch based on that the starter is cranking over???
Even though less common on the 9-5 with the flat blade pin switch but it was very common on the NG900/OG9-3 with a stalling or no start problem caused by a failing +15 power supply not energizing the fuel injection computer.
What you mean is that when the +50 power supply die, the whole car is dead but that is not true. +50 ONLY supply power to starter solenoid.
+15 and +54 can have issues creating a whole slew of problems even though the starter is happily cranking over.
Also on the OG9-3 model, if your headlights went out but you had hibeam still, it was the +X power that had died. The NG900 had a little bit different wiring setup so +X didn't affect them in the same way even though using the same ignition switch.
Yes, it could be the fuel pump if it is not a steady buzzing from it.
The clicking is most likely the pump gear or check valve ball making noises, it does that when the power to pump is interrupted or if the pump is jerky in its operation.
It could also be the CKP sensor not supplying good enough wave form so it only tickles the tach to jump but not good enough to jump start the fuel computer.
Nothing is black and white anymore like an ON/OFF signal of 12 Volt. And this is not even to mention the newer cars with CAN system where we are talking about packets of information missing in the data stream making the car hiccup.
