Usually the control unit on the front of the hydraulic unit. There are very fine wires in there and usually one breaks from heat and vibration.
Your description does not sound like you had the controller tested on a controller tester. BBA reman does the rebuild for 180.00 or so. If yours is OK they will just return it after testing.
Again this is a sort of common failure and it is usually the control unit which can be separated from the hydraulic unit. Saab dealers would only replace the whole thing. Many on this board have taken the control unit off and had it repaired.
How good is you mechanic? He should know this.
