If you're curious about transporting that new TV home, I was just able to squeeze a Samsung PN60E550 box in mine. Had perhaps an inch+ of additional box width to spare.
The box measured 58.75 x 37.75 x 16.75 inches. Dropped the rear seat all the way flat, good to go.
I know the common wisdom is to never transport a plasma (or lcd, I suppose) flat, that the glass isn't supported in that direction, that any bump can flex the glass into the electronics.
But plenty of anecdotal evidence indicated it can be done with no ill effects.
I had no RR tracks to cross, no dirt roads, I slowed down for anything resembling a bump, probably about 7-8 miles total drive, primarily on high-speed roads (that I stayed below my normal speeds).
The alternative for me would be to get my trailer, and even though the TV would have been in the "right" orientation, it would have been bounced all over the place. I figured similar jostling in the back of a pick-up truck.
The box did come with a sand-filled plastic arrow-like thing on the side of the box that was supposed to shift sand into a "bad" zone if placed on its side. I asked the retailer before I picked up the TV (and before I saw this indicator) if I got it home and the screen was cracked or pixels out, if they wouldn't take it back because of me laying flat, and he said no. However, not sure if Samsung would request seeing the indicator before replacing.
