I agree with Snowmobile. If you have never had your positive battery cable replaced, do it.
I have a 2003 Arc (V6), 189K miles. I was getting long cranks, battery was testing good but low voltage. When running, car was testing around 13.9 or 14 volts, but if I did a bunch of short runs, the car would crank longer and I would get the battery light for a few seconds once it started. Alternator tested good.
After replacing CPS still had same trouble.
Tech at dealer near work tested voltage drop on cable and inspected it. Thought that the corrosion was bad enough and the voltage drop significant enough that we should change the cable. All I can say is wow. Crank (which seemed a little slow, but not awful) now is very fast. Car fires up like brand new every time, even after short runs, and battery is carrying a full charge.
The tech and I theorize that the corrosion was preventing the battery from recharging after a start in a timely fashion, and that only my long drives to and from work (35 minutes each way) were allowing the battery to recharge enough to really function. When the voltage got low enough after repeated starts on shorter errands, it had just enough to crank, and barely enough to power the systems that told the fuel system to function and fire.
Its been about a month now, and I cannot get over the difference this made, and frankly the weird symptoms it caused.
Even if your alternator or battery turns out to be part of this issue, check the cable too!
