I was in Waterbury. A friend recommended Exclusively Foreign in Montpelier, but for simplicity's sake I took it to Snowflake in Waterbury, based on the listed mechanics on Saabnet. Simple issue...loose DIC and spark plug wires. The whining sound I heard was low power steering fluid due to a small leak in the high pressure line. Unfortunately, the said the part is on National Backorder so I will drive home with lots of extra fluid.
Here's what I think happened. Last week my ignition lock would not unlock. This seems to be a standard problem when it does not 'pop up' per messages on this board. After playing around for an hour I finally got it freed and brought the car to my indie where it immediately locked up again. They were not able to unlock it, but I did, then we undid the plastic bits. But because they were not Saab guys, and I had to get to work we were not able to 'pop' the little tab to free the cylinder.
Because I needed the car ASAP (for trip to VT), I called the Saab dealer in Boston. They had the cylinder and could key it on the spot. So I drove over there and they put in a new ignition lock ($210 part and $200 labor). As I was leaving check engine light went on so they read the code. I did not write it down but tech said that it represented a misfiring in the cylinders usually due to a failing DIC. I made a mental note to order a spare. At the same time he said he heard a whining sound likely due to belts (it did not attenuate when turning the wheel).
It had been just under 60k miles since last serpentine belt, so I figured it was almost due so back to Indie. He changed the belts, pulley, and tensioner, plus replaced a bad motor mount he found (which was the source of some reported vibration by me). At the same time he said he noticed some corrosion on the power steering line but it did not look like it was leaking.
So all in all, both the Saab dealer and the Indie identified a series of issues but because nothing had 'failed' they left it alone an thus I got stuck in VT. Now I need to find the PS hose.
