Although there have been improvements made to the DIC/IDM and/or ECU software which yields warning codes long before total failure, an owner should anticipate that this failure might happen to them. This module is an aluminum cask filled with sophisticated electronic components and situated in the most inhospitable location possible on the engine.
Not hard to understand why they fail. I averaged ~100K miles of use on each of the three units which were installed in my 2000.
Factory original unit replaced proactively at 90K miles while still operating.
Second unit was replaced as part of the Special Warranty campaign at 190K miles while still operating.
Warranty unit was replaced at ~300K miles due to mis-fire CEL codes upon hot restart.
