I'm sure there's plenty of fuel pumps out there with over 125K miles. This car was also (potentially) over 12 years old. You could just as easily say if your fuel pump is over 12 years old, replace it.
Somewhat common wisdom is that you don't want to continuously run your tank down below 1/8 tank, as the heat generated by the pump is removed (from the pump) by the gas, thus heating up the fluid temperature, that high temps are bad for the pump. This applies to a pump mounted in the tank, which I think is pretty much the standard now. IF that's true, then a pump in a 9-5 in MN that always has at least 1/2 a tank is subject to much different wear than one in an AZ car that consistently refills 15+ gallons.
