Motor mount question

I had the front right motor mount off yesterday to inspect while I replaced the serpentine belts and pulleys. It 'looked' fine and seemed to be intact and have a cushioning effect, but how is it supposed to be? If you pull upwards on the top screw, should it move upwards independent of the bottom part of the mount until it hits metal or is that all supposed to be one unit inside? Any way to test one of these to know if it is good or bad? Is one deemed bad if the rubber inside has crumbled? Thanks! -JerryC
