Hi, I went through the same thing. There are levers on each side of the bulp that you need to push down (left) or up (right) to free the clamps that hold the bulb. I went through the same thing - I just removed battery cover on drivers side and was able to access. I also ended up uncrewing the hose clamps of the air intake hose - taking the MAF (Mass air Flow sensor which is a square metal box on the hose off) and moving aside, then pushing in the hose that goes into the air filter (under fender).
Push the bulb into the center, you need to use a little force once it's centered and going into the round hole. Then, push up the clamp tabs to lock. It took me over an hour for the first tries, but then the next time was only 20 min. Good luck.
I bought Ebay bulbs 3 years ago that I installed and are super bright on my '02 Aero, but the last 4 bulbs I bought from 2 vendors were dim and one flickered and went out. Was refunded and I'm going with genuine Osram next.
