2004 Aero trunk strut - what's the trick?

I'm replacing the trunk struts on my 2004 9-5 Aero sedan, with Meisersatz from Eeuroparts. Working on the first side, the old strut came off easily, but the new one won't compress enough to slip it on to both ends. Putting the rod end on and then trying to compress it doesn't work - the strut won't compress even if I put all my weight on it! Same deal with the old one too, and they are exactly the same length, so I'm positive I have the correct ones.
What's the trick? It looks like I only need like 1/4 inch to get this thing on. Help!
