the way you are wondering could avoid breaking the other. they hold the motor mount bracket (the doughnut) snug against the bracket. I'm sure he broke it, figured no-one would notice, thinking it held something down, not up. The design seems counter-intuitional.
When you go back in with the bolts, the engine shifts just a tad especially when jacked up, so the holes will be just a bit out of line. You can move that to be right various ways, but i was clueless, figured the bolt would line it up. It caught the threads wrong ( i thought i was going into a heavy casting) and snapped that piece off nicely.
If he did as i suspect, he made a big job for you-the alternator has to be detached from the bottom even if left in place, very hard to get at. Poor design where it broke, the bolt is stronger tha the hole, so the bracket lets go instead of a $2, 10-minute bolt.
