Broken Spring? These failures were common on the 9-3SS models and the root cause of corrosion might affect older 9-5 cars as well.
Spring Mount? I have seen photos of some of these being pretty crapped up by the time a car needs new struts.
Strut Bellows? The top part of the bellows provides a resilient seat for the front spring. A torn bellows might allow the spring to skip across the face of the mount making the noise.
