Did some green rollers today Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Sat, 8 Jun 2013 08:29:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My latest acquisition shark-finned the driver's window last Sunday. I ordered 4 of the "Genuine Saab" Rollers via Eeuroparts & got them overnight. I followed Brett's excellent guide (linked), and had it all done in only a few minutes. I think prep took longer than actually opening & closing the door.
Just a few points to add:
I used White Lithium grease, mostly because it was what I could get this morning. Not sure it makes a lot of difference.
As for the hot puddle light, I solved that by opening the door, and pulling fuse #8 on my 1999 Wagon (6/99 production). That doused the door lights (and the trunk lights, SID, and something else...), so it cooled by the time I got the door apart. Check your car's fuse panel in case they switched something later. The only downside is you now have to reset the clock and calendar in SID...
BE CAREFUL with the trim around the window frame. Mine is all but split now, right about midway. I'll be getting a new one, and the clips would still hold it in, it just won't look as nice if it splits. The problem is, the ends have a lot more mass than the middle, and it is really easy to not be paying attention, and have an end go flailing about while part of the thin middle part is still firmly in the clip. The now 14-year-old plastic is brittle, and...
Pliers: If, like me, you're an old-time Saab hand, you'll probably have a few pair of the grey or orange Knipex adjustable pliers that came in the tool kit of an old 99, 900 or 9000 lying about. These are about perfect for getting the two clicks on the rollers. They open wide enough, and the angle is just about right, and you don't need to get your hand inside the door to click the rollers home. But any with an angled jaw (like real ChannelLocks)
Interestingly, I found two intact rollers upon opening the door! Well, intact at first glance, anyway. I haven't really examined them. But I believe someone else was here before, and used rollers that were NOT from Saab. They were a slightly different color, and the molding was not nearly to the same quality. The front pin had popped out of the roller, and the rear one just came out of the channel. Popped the new ones on, and all is good.
